Only if you mean in the literal sense that one community is a bit younger than the other....
To all the people who attended the Chick-Fil-A appreciation day [on Weds, Aug. 1st]:
I hope you enjoyed your chicken because it came at a huge cost. I am talking about the gay and lesbian youth in your community. Some of whom might be your own sons or daughters, nieces or nephews, classmates or students. These kids are subjected to taunting, bullying and hate-filled messages every day. This chronic abuse, on top of all the other angst of youth, wears down their self-esteem. It fills them with guilt and shame and self-hatred. It draws them to self-destructive behaviors including withdrawal or isolation, substance abuse and suicide.
Yesterday your cavalier act of smugly proclaiming your anti-gay animus en masse was very likely the most profoundly hurtful victimization these kids have ever experienced. They watched as their community, their friends, family, neighbors, pastors, teachers and others whom they look up to, glibly took time out of their day to gather together for the sole purpose to declare their mutual disdain for gay and lesbian people. How could a gay youth not be deeply hurt by that? How could the bullies who make that youth’s life a living hell not feel encouraged and validated by that?
Yes I hope you enjoyed that chicken, because thousands of young people choked on it. Only time will tell how many of them ultimately died from it.
