The “wow xkin is so great” posts on the #otherkin and related tags are annoying. And condescending. And just fucking insulting.
I’ve seen more posts and heard more about things like barking, growling, howling, etc. in public.
For me, although I may...
I’ll be honest. I thought a lot, and I mean a lot, about...
trying to find nice things for friends in the otherkin tag is impossible people just want more drama? i want people to talk about...
Since the March anniversary of AnOtherWiki I haven’t really been doing much with it beyond updating the event listings. Frankly, it took a lot of work to meet the target number of articles on time, and I needed a bit of a break and a breather to work on other projects. That break is now over, and I’m again beginning work in earnest on the wiki.
One change, perhaps the biggest, is that AnOtherWiki is no longer hosted on a subdomain of Dreamhart.org but rather has its own domain: AnOtherWiki.org All old urls should properly forward to their respective articles on the new domain; if there are any problems with that please let me know.
Another is that I have, for now, decided to remove the Featured Article section. In time that may be restored, but I think that the random article links and the did you know section adequately showcase the contents of the wiki at present. Besides, with no one nominating articles to be featured the selection has been somewhat arbitrary. I’d like to save featured articles for when it can actually mean something and stand as an achievement for an article to be showcased that way.
I’m also making a push towards getting more community involvement in the wiki. At this time I’ve sent out some messages asking groups and individuals if they would be interested in writing articles for the wiki about their kintypes. So far I’ve approached windigowaks, Tuatha de Danaan, Brinn/Kon’yrii, and Leannan Sidhe. I’ve also asked the fivetrees mailing list if anyone there would be interested in writing an article about Guardians for the wiki, as there has been a good bit of overlap between the two communities in the past. I’ll probably be approaching others soon - I’m going to see if I can find current contacts for polymorphs and Rissti, for instance.
We could also use a lot of help cataloging otherkin websites and other resources, writing about influential persons and groups, making a glossary of community jargon and terms from remembered languages, and just generally expanding the content we have. We’ve planted the seeds of a great encyclopedia by, for, and about our community. Now let’s help it grow.
I’m very pleased to announce that AnOtherWiki has reached a new milestone, hitting a full 600 articles on the eve of it’s one year anniversary. This is an amazing accomplishment, particularly in the face of persistent DDoS attacks which have attempted to make the site unusable, but there’s still so much work yet to be done. Let’s work together in the year to come to double and redouble our efforts. This is our encyclopedia, written for our community by our community and about our community. Let’s make it everything it can be, together.
Thank you all!
I’m very pleased to announce that, despite recent Denial of Service attacks on AnOtherWiki, we’re still here and we’re still going strong. Tonight we’ve hit a new milestone - 400 articles. This is an amazing achievement since we just hit 300 articles on December 24, 2012. We’re currently averaging roughly 2.56 articles a day. We’re hoping to do better still, though, and are aiming for a whopping 600 articles by the wiki’s one-year anniversary on March 20, 2013!
This is our encyclopedia, written for our community by our community and about our community. All it costs us is a bit of time and effort, and the reward is quite worth it. Let’s work together to make it everything it can be.
As always, a big “Thank You!” to everyone who has helped make this possible, and who continues to help us as we grow and mature as a wiki.
It seems there were a couple of problems with account creation on AnOtherWiki. While you could sign up using the login/create account link in the upper right, the link to create an account under the Help:Registration page did not work properly. This has now been corrected.
Further, it appears that I set up the DNSBLs that AnOtherWiki uses to be a bit too strict. As a result, some Comcast users were incorrectly being blocked due to their presence on the Policy Block List of spamhaus.org. I have now stopped using zen.spamhaus.org, which incorporates the Policy Block List, and am using the Spam Block List and Exploit Block List individually. Other users besides Comcast may have been affected, it was just reported by someone using Comcast. If you tried signing up before and were told you were using an open proxy when you weren’t, try again. If you’re still having trouble, send me an email (jarandhel at gmail dot com) with your IP address and I’ll look into it.
Finally, I’ve changed the captcha questions to try to make things a little easier for folks new to the community. If you’re still having trouble with them, or would like to suggest additional general-knowledge otherkin questions that could be used as captchas, please email me at the address above.
AnOtherWiki was started on March 21, 2012. As of 11:00pm EST, December 24, 2012 it now hosts 300 articles about otherkin, therians, vampires and related communities. That’s an average of 1.075 new articles every day. This is an amazing milestone, and I’d like to thank everyone who has helped to make it possible.
AnOtherWiki also hosts what I believe is the most complete and up-to-date listing of upcoming events for otherkin, therians, and vampires anywhere in our communities - though I’m always looking for new ones to add.
I’ve also been making a concerted effort to expand AnOtherWiki’s listing of resources within these communities, and jargon used by our communities. These are ongoing efforts, and will likely take quite a while to complete.
Many of these articles are also still quite sparse. There’s a lot of work to be done to flesh them out, and a vast number of articles still to be added on a wide variety of subjects. So I’m putting out another request for help: Join AnOtherWiki as editors, and help us continue to grow.
Share with us your websites, forums, chats. Your gathers, minigathers, and meetups. Share with us your knowledge of the community, its terms, and the people who make it up.
As I’ve said before: This is our encyclopedia, written for our community by our community and about our community. All it costs us is a bit of time and effort, and the reward is quite worth it. So let’s work together to make it everything it can be.
Not forgot so much as very behind on updating the tumblr section of the blogs listing. There’s no easy way to search tumblr for submission-based/”group” blogs (that I know of) nor to get a lot of the information that I normally use in making such entries - owner’s name, creation date, number of posts, number of people contributing and/or watching, etc. That said, I do have a list of six tumblr blogs I need to add and NonHuman Library is one of them. The others are KinCrafts, Dear Solace, Kin Fashion, The Life Aquatic, and Little Otherkin Things & Otherkin Problems. That’s in addition to the listings already up on AnOtherWiki.
Still working on adding forums to AnOtherWiki, but I just wanted to mention that we’ve hit a small milestone. We now have 218 articles, which is officially more articles than the Therian Wiki which was started in 2006. By way of contrast, AnOtherWiki was started on March 21 of this year. So we are definitely off to a great start, and things are only going to get better.
Updated AnOtherWiki a bit more to list the active otherkin Facebook groups I know of. If I’ve missed any, please let me know or feel free to add them to the wiki yourself:
Next up, forums.
Updated AnOtherWiki to list all of the active DeviantArt groups for otherkin that I currently know about. If I’ve missed any, please let me know. There is space on the wiki for adding articles about inactive sites/resources but at the moment unless they have real historical interest for the community I’m trying to focus on currently-active ones. Active being rather broadly defined as anything that’s showed non-spam activity since 2010 and is not currently overrun by spam.
More Social Networking Groups (particularly Facebook Groups) and other sites will be added to the wiki as time allows. Others are highly encouraged to contribute their own articles if they wish.
Also, older otherkin resources?
The otherkin timeline is at http://orion.kitsunet.net/time.pdf
If you’re looking for older otherkin resources, you should also check out http://orion.kitsunet.net/dir.pdf
I think I’ve got a few old (now defunct) on my site’s link list that Orion may or may not list: http://dreamhart.org/links/?searchll=defunct
I’m also working on indexing as many otherkin sites, lists, resources, etc as I can on http://anotherwiki.dreamhart.org It’s an ongoing project, so not everything’s up there yet.
Is there anything specific you’re looking for? I might be able to point you in the right direction.
jarandhel said: Just for the record, you are getting a listing on AnOtherWiki, I just haven’t gotten around to it yet. Also trying to figure out what category DeviantArt groups fall under or if they need a new section…
I figured you were busy. And, thats a good question, perhaps there should be a category for misc. groups that aren’t a forum or otherwise?
Maybe, though I’m hesitant to make the category overly broad… in some ways I’d almost be inclined to put deviantart groups under blogging since it’s not that different from photo posts. On the other hand, maybe something more like social networking groups would be appropriate? That would cover DeviantArt, Facebook, and probably a few other sites. I’m really not sure yet, going to have to give it a bit of thought. Input always welcome. :)
Well, there’s werelist for starters… they can probably point you to others.
Thank you as well ^^ I really appreciate it.
My pleasure. :)
I think I’m going to start working on indexing forums, websites, and chats on AnOtherWiki next since questions like these are not uncommon.
I’ve also got a basic link list here: http://dreamhart.org/links/ in a less polished form. It’s searchable, if you want to focus on therian/were specific resources. It includes a link to a similar project started by someone in the therian community to try to index all the resources they could find for our communities.
